TMJ & TMD Treatment

TMJ Disorder Treatment

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can significantly impact adults and children, affecting daily life and overall well-being. These conditions can arise from various factors, including stress, jaw injuries, arthritis, or misaligned teeth. Left untreated, TMJ disorders may lead to chronic pain, headaches, and limitations in jaw movement, adversely affecting eating, speaking, and overall quality of life. TMJ creates forward head/scoliosis in children. If left untreated, complications in adulthood follow. Have your children line up - hands at their sides and face the wall. Snap a picture of their head, shoulders back. You will see one shoulder higher in all TMJ cases from age 5 on.

The Importance of Timely TMJ Care for Adults

Seeking timely intervention for TMJ disorders is critical to prevent long-term complications. Adults experiencing symptoms such as jaw pain, frequent headaches, or joint clicking should consider professional evaluation. Early care can alleviate discomfort and correct jaw alignment, enhancing overall functionality and preventing further disorder progression.

If you’re noticing signs of TMJ discomfort, don’t wait—schedule a consultation today to get lasting relief and protect your long-term health.

Long-Term Issues of Unaddressed TMJ Disorders in Adults

Ignoring TMJ disorders in adulthood can lead to severe and potentially permanent complications including:

  • Chronic pain: Often develops into debilitating conditions, affecting work performance and personal relationships.
  • Dental stress: Significant tooth wear, leading to costly dental interventions.
  • Postural strain: Forward head posture may contribute to osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and vertebral compression.
  • Mental health impact: Persistent discomfort can lead to anxiety, depression, and reduced overall well-being.

Timely assessment and intervention are crucial in avoiding these adverse outcomes, allowing adults to regain control over their lives. Forward head from age five and persisting into adulthood creates problems not thought to have TMJ as a culprit.

Early TMJ Care for Children

At TMJ Sleep Center, we understand that children's dental concerns can be daunting for both kids and parents. Our specialized ortho/TMJ services are designed to optimize growth, breathing, arch width (upper and lower), muscle harmony with proper jaw position.

As early as five years old, kids can show symptoms of TMJ. Through the many years of real-life cases, we have seen children improve their nasal/Diaphragmatic breathing with optimization of maxillary, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses to allow for proper airway flow through the face.

Timely treatment of TMJ disorders in children is essential for healthy growth and lasting comfort. Even mild symptoms—such as jaw clicking, soreness, or difficulty chewing—can signal developing alignment concerns. Early evaluation allows our specialists to identify these issues quickly, guiding gentle interventions that support proper jaw development, balanced muscle function, and improved breathing.

Gentle Techniques for Growing Smiles

Our approach is rooted in a philosophy of gradual, noninvasive treatments. Palatal expansion appliances turn a quarter-millimeter (non painful), which allows for comfort while creating flexibility in the facial bones and sinuses for maximum air flow and arch optimization. “No mouth is too small” at the TMJ & Sleep Center means we optimize arch width and jaw position so removal of teeth is not necessary.

Long-Term Issues of Untreated TMJ Disorders in Children

Neglecting TMJ disorders during childhood can lead to persistent and complex challenges as your child grows, including:

  • Chronic pain: May develop into tension headaches, facial pain, or jaw locking.
  • Dental complications: Misalignment or uneven wear that can require extensive orthodontic correction.
  • Postural strain: Early imbalance of head and neck posture may result in chronic alignment issues.
  • Osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis and vertebral compression - All seen with forward head due to an misalignment thousands of times a day into the head if left uncorrected.
  • Emotional effects: Ongoing pain or discomfort can affect self-esteem, social interactions, and overall quality of life.

Addressing TMJ concerns early helps prevent these outcomes, allowing children to enjoy proper growth, alignment, and long-term dental health.

Answering Your Questions / FAQs

Will the procedure hurt? Our methods are designed to minimize discomfort and we will never include anything that is painful for you. Most people say their pain is reduced as soon as they start wearing the orthotics. There are no needles, drugs, or surgery at the TMJ & Sleep Center

How long will treatment take? Each case is unique; however, we focus on delivering long-term results through gradual improvements. Generally see treatment last 18-24 months total, since we are creating a lasting solution without any invasive procedures.

What can we expect after treatment? Enhanced quality of life, reduced pain, improved jaw functionality and postural improvement. As the head goes over the spine with continued function it weighs less - making the postural vertebrae open up - relieving pressure and strain.

Is this covered? We don’t accept insurance. If you would like to try to coordinate with your medical insurance, please do so before treatment begins, as some require pre-authorization for coverage. Every medical insurance is different for what they cover related to TMJ. We are not in any provider network for medical, but there may be out of network options.

You will want to file your medical claims to get reimbursement if you have coverage.
